Fubo B-29 Air Crash Crew Monument

<< Back to Fuboheiwa Memorial Park

Details:

The second to the left-most monument.

Monument

The monument consists of a large rectangular horizontal stele featuring granite panels that list the names of all 34 Americans with the serviceman’s name, age, role in the bomber, rank, and the plane they were on, written in English and Japanese. On top of this stele is a free-standing large granite panel containing an illustration or a map of where each of the planes crashed on the mountain.

On March 10, 1945, near the end of World War II, three U.S. B-29 bombers, caught in a fierce blizzard, crashed into Mount Fubo in northern Japan’s Zao Mountain Range. They were returning to Guam after the Great Tokyo Air Raid. B29-42-63564, along with 44-69747 and 42-65310, made a navigational error and crashed killing all 34 aircrew members when their cargo of incendiary bombs exploded in flames. Witnessing the crashes, local villagers made a difficult climb to the mountain’s summit, respectfully buried the bodies, and later exhumed them after the war.

In September 1961, city council members of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, and others took the initiative in erecting a memorial to the dead U.S. soldiers near the crash site. The unveiling ceremony was attended by 200 people, including local residents as well as representatives from the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. military in Japan. Also, on August 2, 2015, a construction committee organized by volunteer residents of Shichigajuku Town and Shiroishi City created the Fubo Peace Memorial Park in the Choro district of Shichigajuku Town, and an unveiling ceremony was held with 600 local residents and representatives from the U.S. military in Japan.
