William Elsworth Fry was born on January 5, 1920, in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Eleanor M. Vickers Kottraba. He was the husband of Bette J. Rice Cianci.
He served in the 873rd Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, as a Sergeant and tail gunner of B-29 Superfortress #44-69747 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on March 10, 1945, when the aircraft made a navigational error and crashed into Mt. Fubo.
