Russell J. Sage was born on October 1, 1924, in Red Fork Township, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. He was the son of John Ira Sage and Lydia Ellen Reeves Sage.
Sage attended Wagoner High School in 1942 where he was Junior Class President, and graduated from the Ft. Gibson High School in the Class of 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on May 7, 1945, following graduation. He served in the 52nd Bomber Squadron, 29th Bombardment Group, Very Heavy, as a Flight Officer and bombardier of B-29-30-BA Superfortress #42-63564 during World War II. Flight Officer Sage was aboard a B-29 which failed to return to its base from a bombing mission to Tokyo, Japan on March 10, 1945, where he was Killed in Action.
