Freteval Escaped Airmen Camp
Details:
In the middle of a clearing by the D24.
Background
Tens of thousands of allied aircraft were shot down or crash-landed in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. Escape and evasion lines operated by civilian volunteers in France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Denmark helped about 5,000 downed allied airmen evade capture by the Germans and escape to a neutral country such as Spain. However, in 1944, heavy allied bombing of railroads and other transportation infrastructure made escape to neutral counties increasingly difficult in the run-up to the Normandy Invasion of France.
The United Kingdom's military intelligence organization, MI9, decided that, as an alternative to exfiltrations of downed airmen, to gather airmen into isolated forest camps where they could await the arrival of allied armies. MI9 official Airey Neave conceived of Operation Marathon in the fall of 1943 and began planning the operation with three Belgians: Jean de Blommaert, Georges d'Oultremont, and Albert Ancia. All of them were or had been associated with the Comet Line. They selected three locations for forest camps: the Freteval forest, 150 kilometers (93 mi) southwest of Paris, a forest near Rennes in Brittany, and the Ardennes forest in Belgium. The Freteval forest was code-named Sherwood. Neave began training personnel and parachuting or landing them secretly in France to prepare for the implementation of Marathon. The three Belgians identified fields for aircraft landings and parachute drops of supplies and identified people who lived near the proposed forest camps and were willing to assist airmen.
Freteval Camp
In the spring of 1944, in preparation for the landing operations, the Allied air force pounded France. Faced with the need to protect and hide downed pilots, Jean de Blommaert, a member of the Comète network, entrusted Colonel Lucien Boussa with the task of creating a camp for airmen shot down in France, Belgium, and Germany.
The camp, known as Bellande, was set up in March 1944 and following the success, a second camp was then opened in the forest, at the Richeray forest house, in the commune of Busloup, not only because of the number of aviators installed but also and above all to limit the risks in the event of an intervention by the Germans.
The camp hosted 152 British, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Belgian, and South African airmen. Their planes were strafed over Belgium and France. Out of 152, sixty-five of these are Americans. To reach the camp, they generally travel through Paris, thanks to the Comète network.
The airmen's final journey was at night in small groups, simply following the road.
Only once was a woman smuggler, "Virginia", caught leading five airmen. She bravely swallowed the plan to get to the camp to maintain secrecy. She was then tortured and then sent to the Ravensbruck camp, from where she came back alive. (Her name was Virginia d'Albert-Lake, born in Dayton, OH in 1910, graduate of Rollins College and moved to France. Died in 1997 after being awarded the French Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre)
Most of the 152 airmen rescued in the Freteval forest returned to duty and by the war's end, 38 of them had been killed.
