Stuart K. Barr was born in 1918 in Florida. He served in the 712th Bomber Squadron, 448th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Flight Officer and Co-Pilot on the B-24 #42-64447 'The Commanche' during World War II.
On March 20, 1944, at 09:30 AM, his crew took off from Station 146 airfield in Seething, England, for a bombing mission to Frankfurt, Germany. Shot down by flak on their return from the mission, the crew evacuated the plane at 13,000 feet around 01:30 PM. All members survived, but only two of them, including F/O Barr, evaded enemy capture. The rest of the members were taken as prisoners. F/O Barr was one of the 152 allied airmen and soldiers who were helped and hidden in the Freteval Forest camp by the French Resistance to evade German capture.
