Eugene Curtis Anderson, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, was born on April 28, 1924. He served in the 846th Bomber Squadron, 489th Bomber Group, as a Sergeant and Gunner on the B-24 #42-94933 'Stubby Gal II' during World War II.
On June 2, 1944, his crew took off from Station 365 airfield in Halesworth, England, on a bombing mission to Brétigny-sur-Orge and Creil airfields. Shut down by flak with three engines out of service, their airplane crashed in Villers-St-Paul, France. All members bailed out before the plane crashed except for the Radio Operator, who was killed by the shrapnel. Seven members were captured by the Germans; only two were able to evade the capture, including Sgt Anderson. He was one of the 152 allied airmen and soldiers who were helped and hidden in the Freteval Forest camp by the French Resistance to evade German capture.
