Marion Knight was born in 1922 in Runge, Texas. He served in the 326th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomb Group, as a Sergeant and Tail Gunner on the B-17 #42-31387 during World War II.
On February 8, 1944, his crew took off from Station 109 airfield in Podington, England, for a bombing mission to Frankfurt, Germany. At around 10:40 AM, their plane was shot down by Fw190 fighters and crashed in the woods of Cornette à Loup in the town of Catheux, France - 6 km northeast of Crevecoeur-le-Grand. Sgt Knight was able to bail out and through the help of the maquis, was able to return to England. He was one of the 152 allied airmen and soldiers who were helped and hidden in the Freteval Forest camp by the French Resistance to evade German capture.
