B-26 Marauder 41-34765 Memorial
Details:
On the east side of the parking lot, opposite the Whitesands Camping and Whitesands Beach House.
A propeller blade of the aircraft set in a small concrete/pebbled mound with a commemorative plaque affixed. The plaque is inscribed in English in black lettering. An image of a B-26 Marauder airplane is printed on the top center.
On June 4, 1943, the crew had taken off from Port Lyauty (now Kenitra), Morocco bound for St Eval in Cornwall, England, a flight that would have been approximately 1,070 to 1,090 nautical miles. But, due to poor weather and fog, the formation became separated as it neared Britain. Their airplane missed St Eval, England, and was headed for the Pembrokeshire coastline. On that day, the Carn Llidi mountain, near St. Davids, was obscured in clouds and the B-26 struck at high speed; the crew didn't stand a chance.
