B-24 (44-50747) Liberator 'Sound Wave' Memorial
Details:
On the west side of the road.
Monument
The memorial is composed of sculptures made of corten steel that are topped by unique designs. The designs are sound wave images (tilted ninety degrees so that they look like a descending plane) produced on the recording of the first and last names of the crew members.
The Brouwershaven City Council and the Brouwershaven Culture & Heritage Foundation have taken the initiative for the artwork and have commissioned the artist from Zonnemaire. The artist deliberately placed the monument on top of the dike, so that the crew 'looks down' on the spot where they crashed. On the dike, the sculptures also seem to 'fly' even more. It has been named Sound Wave B24M 10-FO 44-507474. Over a length of 33.5 m - the wingspan of the bomber's wings - there are nine steel sculptures, one for each crew member. On the base of each sculpture, the name of the crew member is inscribed. A commemorative plaque can be found nearby.
The memorial was unveiled on September 12, 2020.
On April 5, 1945, the American bomber B-24M crashed in this area, hit by German anti-aircraft fire. All nine crew members were killed.
