Howard E. Young, Jr. was born on June 15, 1922, in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

He served in the 566th Bomber Squadron, 389th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the B-24M-10-FO Liberator #44-50747 during World War II.

Departing from RAF Hethel/AAF Station 114 in Norfolk, England, he was Killed in Action on April 5, 1945 aboard B-24 #44-50747. That day, the 389th BG was on a mission to hit the marshaling yards at Plauen, Germany. His plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire from a German ship off the coast of Holland (The Netherlands). It caused a fuel leak and the pilot radioed he would attempt a landing. The plane crashed between Brouwershaven and Zonnemaire, The Netherlands.. All nine on board were killed.
