George Eckard Yockey was born on May 19, 1915, in Spencer, Indiana. He was the son of Kenneth and Hester (Guynn) Yockey. He was married to Kate Yockey. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

George was a lifelong member of the Spencer American Legion, a member of the Indiana University Varsity Club, and an active member of the First Christian Church of Spencer. He retired in 1975 from the Indiana National Guard with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, serving as the in-charge of the machine shops at Stout Field in Indianapolis. He died on May 6, 2006, and is now buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Owen County, Indiana, USA.
