Carl Vinson was born on February 7, 1924, in Allen, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. He was the son of William Conard Vinson and Susan Eva "Susie" Melton Vinson. He was married to Zelma June Royer Vinson. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

After the war, Carl worked in the oilfield and in construction. He died on October 6, 2018, and is now buried in the Allen Cemetery, Allen, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, USA.
