Burtis M. Tyler was born on March 7, 1922, in New Castle County, Delaware. He was the son of Solomon Goldsborough "Goldie" Tyler Sr. and Alma Aaron Tyler. He was married to Audrey A. Tyler. He attended Cambridge High School. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

In 1970, SSgt Tyler attended the Bible Institute in Greenville, South Carolina. He worked for Perdue and later for Golden Pride, where he served as head of trucking maintenance. At the time, he was also developing a patent aimed at improving alignment systems for large transport trucks. He died on April 15, 2012, and is now buried in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, Sussex County, Delaware, USA.
