Elmer Y. “Buddy” Tompkins was born on February 11, 1923, in Athens, Henderson County, Texas. He was the son of Joseph Sidney "Joe" Tompkins and Kizzie William Yates Tompkins. He was married to Bonnie V. Moore Tompkins. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.
After the war, he worked as a building contractor for more than fifty years. He was a Mason and a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge, as well as a member of Midway Baptist Church. He died on March 20, 2012, and is now buried in the Concord Cemetery, Chandler, Henderson County, Texas, USA.
