Carl Alton Shores Sr. was born on May 26, 1917, in Holdenville, Hughes County, Oklahoma. He was the son of James Larcus "Jim" Shores and Carrie Sarah Jane Fennell Shores. He was married to Montez Vivian Davis Shores and later to Maxine Evelyn Canfield Shores. He enlisted in the service on February 23, 1943. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

Cpl Shores was discharged from the service on November 16, 1945. After the war, he worked as an instrument electrician at Tinker Air Force Base until his retirement in 1970. He was also employed as a meat cutter at several local grocery stores. He died on November 20, 1997, and is now buried in the Resthaven Gardens Cemetery, Oklahoma City, Cleveland County, Oklahoma, USA.
