Gerald Jacob Maier was born on August 11, 1917, in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Jacob and Catherine Reng Maier. He was married to Ella Preston. He attended St. Nicholas Elementary School, graduated from James M. Coughlin High School, and later attended Wilkes College. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

Gerald worked for the A&P Tea Company until his retirement. He died on December 12, 1997, and is now buried in the Saint Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA.
