Charles S. Jones served in the 859th Bombardment Squadron (Special Operations), 15th Special Operations Group (Provisional), as a Sergeant and Waist Gunner of B-24 #42-50447 nicknamed 'Flying Rumor' during World War II.
On the night of April 16–17, 1945, B-24H Liberator “Flying Rumor” was shot down by a German night fighter while flying a secret Carpetbagger mission over occupied Czechoslovakia. Piloted by 1st Lt. Thomas O. McCarthy, the aircraft had departed with four other Liberators to deliver military supplies to Czech resistance fighters associated with the R3 (Council of Three) movement near Kamna. Shortly before reaching the drop zone near midnight, the aircraft was struck in the right inboard engine and center wing by enemy fire, causing it to become uncontrollable. The crew successfully bailed out before the bomber crashed in flames in a field near the town of Tišnov in the Brno region, destroying most of its cargo. All eight crew members survived and, with the assistance of local partisans, managed to evade German capture. They later reached partisan-controlled territory and, after the war ended, traveled to Pilsen in the American occupation zone before eventually returning home.
Currently, we don't have details about his post-war life, death, or burial location.
