Herman Alphonso Long was born on October 30, 1922, in Fort Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma. He was the son of William Franklin "Willie" Long and Alberta Fay Hall Long. He was married to Wanda Oletha Holman Long. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.
Following his military service, he worked in construction until retiring in June 1988 and was honored with a 50-year service pin from his local labor union. He was a member of Local Labor Union 495, American Legion Post 193, and Sullivan Village Church of Christ. He died on September 3, 2011, and is now buried in the Memory Lane Cemetery, Anadarko, Caddo County, Oklahoma, USA.
