Roman Burton “R.B.” Johnson was born on February 18, 1924, in Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas. He was the son of Walter William Johnson and Mona Gabriella Dillard Johnson. He was married to Carra Beth Ball Johnson. He graduated from Quail High School in Texas and entered military service on February 26, 1943, joining the U.S. Army. SSgt Johnson served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort. After training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he deployed to the European Theater in August 1944. Serving in a mortar platoon, he took part in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe campaigns, where he supervised a heavy mortar squad and directed fire from a forward observation post, remaining in service until his discharge on January 10, 1946.
After his military service, R.B. worked for Phillips Chemical in Texas and Farmers Chemical in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before relocating with his family to Fremont, Nebraska, in 1965. There, he was employed by C.F. Industries until his retirement in 1986. He was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Fremont for over 60 years and a life member of V.F.W. Post #854. He was also formerly affiliated with the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200. In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and was a life member of the Fremont Woodcarvers Association, specializing in carving waterfowl, songbirds, and game birds. He died on May 28, 2012, and is now buried in the Memorial Cemetery, Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska, USA.
