Raymond Francis Hummingbird was born on December 27, 1922, in Stilwell, Adair County, Oklahoma. He was the son of Raymond Augustus "Gus" Hummingbird and Iva Mae Coombes Hummingbird. He was first married to Malinda Lea Williams Hummingbird and later to Glorena "Yetch" Crittenden Doyle. He attended Peavine School and later graduated from Stilwell High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Army in March 1943. TSgt Hummingbird served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort. During World War II, he served as a communications chief and rifle marksman, participating in campaigns in the Ardennes and Rhineland, and in the Battle of the Bulge.

After his discharge in 1946, he went on to work as a railroad agent for the Santa Fe Railroad in several locations, including Topeka, Emporia, Olathe, and Tulsa, from 1947 until his retirement in 1982. He died on December 28, 2015, and is now buried in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, Muskogee County, Oklahoma, USA.
