Clarence Raymond “CR” Horn was born on December 25, 1923, in Ranger, Eastland County, Texas. He was the son of Harmon Lafayette Horn and Sarah Lucretia Casey Horn. He was married to Ernestine Carolyn Lee Horn. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 25, 1943, at Camp Wolters, Texas, and completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. PFC Horn served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort. After training, the 740th spent 8 months at the Desert Training Center in Arizona before deploying to England. From there, they crossed the English Channel and landed at Utah Beach, advancing through France and arriving in Neufchâteau, Belgium, in November 1944.

Although combat was not initially expected until early 1945, the situation changed with the German offensive in the Ardennes on December 15, 1944. On December 18, the 740th was sent to Spaumont, Belgium, to retrieve combat vehicles and supplies. The battalion was then attached to the 119th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division, where it took part in the Battle of the Bulge. The 740th also participated in two additional major campaigns: Rhineland and Central Europe.

Horn was discharged on January 10, 1946, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He later graduated from Texas Tech University in 1950 and spent 40 years working in the mobile home business. He died on January 16, 2012, and is now buried in the Gerald Cemetery, Gerald, McLennan County, Texas, USA.
