Paul Lawrence Gittings was born on December 15, 1922, in Grandfield, Tillman County, Oklahoma. He was the son of Cyrus A. Gittings and Alice T. Hollister Gittings. He was married to Reba June King Gittings. Cpl Gittings served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.
After his military service, he initially settled in his hometown of Grandfield, Oklahoma. In 1969, a job transfer with Texas Electric brought the family to Graham, Texas, where he would spend the remainder of his career before retiring. Alongside his work in the electric company, Gittings remained deeply connected to farming and ranching. He died on December 22, 2010, and is now buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, Graham, Young County, Texas, USA.
