Harold Richard “Dick” Clark was born on January 17, 1925, in Junction City, Perry County, Ohio. He was the son of Raymond Aloysius "Toad" Clark and Cecelia Agnes McGreevy Clark. He was married to Shirley Mae Towns Clark. He was a graduate of Junction City High School, Class of 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 during World War II. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.
On December 24, 1944, his unit played a key role in liberating the town of La Gleize, Belgium, from Nazi forces during the Ardennes campaign. After the war, he studied at the American University in London before earning his business degree from Ohio University. He later relocated to Detroit to join the executive training program at J.L. Hudson’s. Following the company’s merger with Dayton’s in Minneapolis, now known as Target Corporation, he built a long and successful executive career, traveling across Europe and Asia for merchandising and private-label manufacturing. He took great pride in his hometown, especially Clark’s Grocery Store in Junction City, a family-owned business with a legacy of 103 years. A member of SPEBSQSA, he sang in a barbershop chorus for many years, traveling and even competing at the national level. Clark died on February 23, 2021, and is now buried in the Saint Patricks Cemetery, Junction City, Perry County, Ohio, USA.
