Robert O. “Bob” Carpenter was born on June 10, 1924, in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. He was the son of Osman J. "Doney / O.J." Carpenter and Mabel Westphal Carpenter. He graduated from Russellville High School in 1942. Sgt Carpenter served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort. He was wounded in action during the Battle of the Bulge.

After returning home, Bob worked alongside his father and brothers in farming and the family’s livery business. He died on February 8, 2011, and is now buried in the Russellville Oakland Cemetery, Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, USA.
