Harold Garner Bradley was born on July 17, 1924, in Elmore City, Garvin County, Oklahoma. He was the son of Ira and Zelaner Shaw Bradley. He was married to Kathleen Irene Cobble. After graduating in 1942, Bradley was drafted into the U.S. Army in February 1943. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort. His unit entered combat in December 1944 and fought in major campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was recognized for his bravery and service with numerous decorations.
Though wounded in action on April 16, 1945, in the European Theater, he continued serving until the end of the war and was honorably discharged in December 1945. After the war, Bradley returned to civilian life, becoming an active member of his church and community, and working for 37 years with the Pauls Valley Daily Democrat as a reporter, editor, and photographer, where he was known for sharing positive stories and connecting with local students. He was also active in organizations such as the Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, and American Legion. He died on September 15, 2023, and is now buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Pauls Valley, Garvin County, Oklahoma, USA.
