Herbert V. Sweeney was born on August 30, 1919, in Jackson County, Missouri. He was the son of Harry E. Sweeney and Etta M. Geiser Sweeney. He attended Karnes Grade School and Lathrop Polytechnic High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and had previously worked for the Manor Baking Company. Cpl Sweeney served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

Cpl Sweeney was killed in action on February 25, 1945, in Germany. He is now buried in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, USA.
