Monument

The monument comprises a brass plaque on a granite stele, recognizing the 4th Battalion, 229th Aviation Regiment, based at Illesheim, Germany, during the late Cold War period.

The 229th Aviation Regiment was first constituted on 18 March 1964 into the Regular Army as the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion and assigned to the 11th Air Assault Division at Fort Benning, Georgia. On 16 September 1988, the 229th Aviation Battalion was formally reorganized and redesignated as the 229th Aviation Regiment. Also in 1988, the 229th Aviation Regiment was granted permission from the American Volunteer Group (better known as the Flying Tigers to use their name and logo. All units within the 229th Aviation Regiment became proudly known as the Flying Tigers.

On 1 March 1989, Company D, 229th Aviation Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 229th Aviation Regiment and activated at Fort Hood, Texas. The unit subsequently moved to Illesheim, Germany, as one of the first units equipped with the AH-64A Apache to deploy overseas. In 1994, the 4th Battalion was inactivated in Illesheim as part of Army downsizing after the end of the Cold War.
