Monument
The monument features a concrete base supporting a brick wall constructed with bricks sourced from the homes of descendants of those who witnessed the crash. Rising from the wall are three metal rods holding the silhouette of a P-47 D Republic Thunderbolt, the aircraft flown by 1st Lt. Edgar N. Peters. At the center of the brick wall, a rectangular plaque displays the emblems of the 64th Fighter Squadron and the 57th Fighter Group, commemorating Lt. Peters, who was killed in action on September 4, 1944. The monument was unveiled on September 4, 2024, marking the 80th anniversary of his death, and is maintained by the Comitato Spontaneo 4 Settembre 1944.
On September 4, 1944, tragedy struck the village of Migliandolo when an American military plane, piloted by 1Lt Edgar N. Peters, crashed into the hill known as Bric Parot after narrowly missing the rooftops of nearby houses. Witnesses recalled hearing ominous sounds from the aircraft before the crash. Peters sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures and a deep head wound, and was pronounced dead by the village doctor. Shortly after, German soldiers arrived to inspect the crash site and permitted his burial. Peters was initially interred at the Migliandolo cemetery, with a cross bearing his name and date of death. He was later exhumed and reburied at Saint Paul’s Church Cemetery in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York, USA.
