Edgar Nelson Peters was born on July 26, 1922, in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Edgar Thorne Peters and Blanche Edith Van Leuven Peters. He was married to Elizabeth Jane "Bette" Yeomans Bush. Edgar attended Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie, where he graduated in 1940. He trained at Spence Field in Georgia, where he earned his silver wings and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Following additional training in Florida, Peters was deployed overseas in 1944 to the Allied airbase at Alto Landing Ground in Corsica. Stationed with the 64th Fighter Squadron, part of the 57th Fighter Group, Peters participated in Operation Strangle, a campaign to disrupt enemy logistics by targeting railways, bridges, and supply lines supporting the Nazi front in Italy. By August 1944, he had completed 75 missions, earned a promotion to First Lieutenant, and received the Air Medal. On September 4, 1944, while on a mission over Italy, 1Lt Peters tragically lost his life when his aircraft crashed near the village of Migliandolo. Eyewitnesses reported that his plane grazed rooftops before impacting a hill known as Bric Parot.
