Monument
Three rough-hewn monuments with rectangular plaques honor Lieutenant Colonel Charles Timmes, commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, along with the paratroopers of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR) and the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), who fought in a battle near this site from June 6 to June 9, 1944. The plaques are written in French and were inaugurated in August 2007.
The 2nd Battalion, 507th PIR, scattered by anti-aircraft fire during their D-Day drop, regrouped under Lieutenant Colonel Timmes and established a defensive perimeter at Timmes Orchard, where they held out under relentless German attacks from June 6–9, 1944. On June 8, reinforcements from the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR) and the 508th PIR crossed the Merderet to link up with Timmes’ position, allowing the combined forces to repel German assaults and secure the La Fière area on June 9.
