Monument
A rough-hewn stone monument with a rectangular black plaque honoring the soldiers of Company B, 756th Tank Battalion, and Company L, 15th Infantry Regiment, who lost their lives on August 27, 1944. The monument is written in French and English and lists the names and ranks of the fallen soldiers, as well as the unit's insignias.
On August 27, 1944, the village of Allan in southern France was liberated as part of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division’s advance during the Southern France Campaign, which began with Operation Dragoon. The battle for Allan saw fierce fighting between Company L of the 15th Infantry Regiment and German forces, supported by American tanks from B Company, 756th Tank Battalion.
During the engagement, a sudden German counterattack led by a Panther tank resulted in significant losses for the American forces. Lieutenant Edgar Danby's tank was destroyed in the attack, and several soldiers from L Company were killed or captured. Nine American soldiers lost their lives that day. Despite the high cost, the Americans were able to secure the village after reinforcements arrived the following morning, holding their ground against the German resistance. Notably, no civilians from Allan were harmed during the battle.
