Pvt Meyer and Pvt Brauner Monument - 79th Infantry Division

<< Back to Loué

Details:

On the north side of the road.

Monument

A concrete slab monument with a rectangular white plaque, framed by rough-hewn stone masonry on both sides. The plaque is written in French. Though the monument says that on August 7, 1944, the two soldiers were killed on different dates.  Private Meyer died on August 6 when the liberation of the town started, while Private Brauner died on August 15, eight days after the liberation.

The liberation of Loué began on August 6, 1944, as American forces, part of the U.S. 79th Infantry Division, advanced through the region following the breakout from Normandy. The fighting around Loué lasted until August 7, 1944, when the town was fully liberated.

This operation was part of the larger Allied effort to push German forces out of western France and continue the momentum from the successful D-Day landings and the subsequent Battle of Normandy. The liberation of nearby towns, such as Mayenne and Le Mans, happened around the same period, contributing to the Allied advance towards Paris.
