La Doderie Sherman Tank Crew Plaque
Details:
On the north side of the road.
Plaque
A rectangular granite stone mounted on a concrete base bearing a plaque written in French. The plaque contains the names of the four crewmembers and their images providing historical context and commemorating the soldiers. It also has the insignias of the 712th Tank Battalion and 90th Infantry Division and an image of the Sherman tank.
On July 26, 1944, the men of the 90th Infantry Division were in a difficult position in The Battle of Hospital Road. They called for help from the 712th Tank Battalion which was attached to the division. The first tank to enter into the main road was commanded by Staff Sergeant Tullio Micaloni. He and his crew T/4 James Gaither, Private Nicholas Milczakowski, and Private First Class Frank Krusel were killed by land mines. Their sacrifice and the sacrifices of many more resulted in German resistance giving way, allowing the 90th Infantry Division to liberate the town of Périers on July 27, 1944.

Monument Text:
English translation:
On July 26, 1944, following the attack launched the same morning,
the men of the 359th Regiment of the 90th American Infantry Division
were in a bad position facing an enemy firmly entrenched in the Chemin de l'Hôpital.
The Sherman tanks of Company B of the 712th Armored Battalion (attached to the 90th)
sent to their aid were unable to cross the marsh bordering the Sèves or take the destroyed
Joliment bridge. They must therefore progress via a bypass, Chemin des Soutanes (on your right).
Sensing that the road is trapped, the tank commanders stop the convoy and draw lots for the
tank which will have to take the lead. The Sherman's normal crew is five men
but this was a suicide mission, one of them Victor Karbowski disembarked.
A few meters further on, before even crossing the ford on the Sèves,
the designated tank jumped on a pile of mines,
instantly killing the four remaining crew members.
All died for your freedom.
don't forget them!
