The memorial remembers 2LT Dolor 'Del" Martin of the 360th Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group.  He was KIA on November 11, 1943 while escorting bombers from a mission to Munster, Germany.

On Thursday November 11, 1943 at 2:15pm  the 28 year old 2nd Lieutenant Dolor A. Martin of Gloucester, Massachusetts died in a farmland near the corner of Harnschesteeg and Krommesteeg.

Dollar Martin was a pilot of Republic P-47D Thunderbolt of the 356th Fighter Group of the 8th US Air Force based out of Martlesham Heath, England.


On November 11, 1943 his unit was tasked to escort the withdrawal of a bomber group that had attacked a marshaling yard near Munster, Germany. In the vicinity of Ede, Dolor Martin was engaged with German fighters and was shot down.  

He died for our freedom.
