When Dolor Alfred Martin was born on June 30, 1915, in Mainstone, Shropshire, England, his father, Joseph, was 26 and his mother, Lillian, was 25. He married Martha Frances Curry on June 28, 1942, in Montgomery, Alabama. They had one child during their marriage.
Dolor served in the Navy when he was 25 years old. He then enlisted in the Army on January 26, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts, when he was 26 years old.
Dolor was assigned to the 360th Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a Pilot, with a rank of Second Lieutenant. He was Killed in Action on November 11, 1943, in P-47D #42-8668. 2Lt Martin's aircraft was last seen in the vicinity of Arnhem, Holland, while on a mission to escort B-17s attacking at Munster, Germany. He left the formation to return to his base because his aircraft was having mechanical problems. It is believed he was suffering from a lack of oxygen. He and the aircraft crashed near Veenendaal, Holland. 2Lt Martin was buried in the cemetery of Ede, Holland. A memorial remembers him in Bennekom, Netherlands.
