From American fighters in the Foreign legion, 1914-1918 by Paul Ayres Rockwell:
Schuyler Deming was fatally wounded during the German bombardment. It was his first day in the trenches after a short leave. A mortar shell exploded near him; his left leg was torn off* just below the knee, and bits of splinter lodged in his stomach. Deming was rushed to a field hospital, and died there on June 22, 1917.
During WW2, the 357th Infantry Regiment, remembered his sacrifice with a graveside tribute.
