Isolated Burial

A gray stone tombstone feature a cross marks the resting place of Peter D. Schmitt, an American soldier killed on November 19, 1918, during the First World War. The cross features a French roundel. A native of Merrill, Wisconsin, Schmitt was a private in the 120th Field Artillery Regiment, 32nd 'Red Arrow' Division and was killed when a shell exploded in the breech of a canon. During the war the 32nd Division earned the nickname "Les Terribles" (English: "The Terribles") due to their ferocious style of combat, making them the only American division to earn a nom-de-guerre during the war.
