He was a gunner on the front line when suddenly, one ammunition box exploded inside the breech of a cannon, destroying it. Peter, badly injured, was transported to the field-hospital 50 in Saumur, where he died.
Before he died, he asked to be buried in French soil. He is the only American interred at Saumur that remains to this day. All others were repatriated to the United States, but Schmitt's parents did not want his body to be disturbed. (From Find a grave)
