Ludwigsau Kassel Mission Airmen's Memorial

This site includes a memorial of three monuments remembering U.S. airmen who died in what is known as the 'Kassel Mission' which was intense air combat over the area on 27 September 1944, and is considered among the largest single day loss of any American Group during the war - the 445th Bomber Group. This is the location where the lead B-24J Liberator (42-51541) of 703rd Squadron, 445th Bombardment Group (Heavy) crashed that day, with the loss of about half its crew onboard, including the Group lead pilot, Captain John Chilton, and the Mission Commander, Major Don McCoy. It was one of 25 bombers shot down that day. The memorial also remembers the 18 German pilot losses that day which tried to intercept the bombers.

Memorial is located in a wooded area Seulingswald 2 kilometers east of village Friedlos in the municipality of Ludwigsau, in the district Hersfeld-Rotenburg in northeasterh Hessen.
