McMurdo Station is a United States Antarctic research station on the south tip of Ross Island, which is in New Zealand–claimed Ross Dependency on the shore of McMurdo Sound in Antarctica. It is operated by the United States through the United States Antarctic Program, a branch of the National Science Foundation. At McMurdo, the National Science Foundation uses a building called the Chalet as their central office – this includes office space for the senior representative, high-level administrative staff, travel staff, as well as general reception and meeting spaces for science and program-related meetings. The memorial pictured above is on the back deck of the chalet. The chalet is located on the corner of town, with easy access from the center of town.
