James Franklin Standish was born on February 16, 1896 and was the son of Herbert Franklin Standish and Mary Burt Littell. He attended school in Litchfield, Minnesota; Donnybrook, North Dakota; and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was an Auto Mechanic.

James Standish enlisted on July 19, 1918 at Minot, North Dakota. He trained at Camp Green and Camp Mills. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company K, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He participated in the battle of Chateau Therry. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He also has a cenotaph in Victory Memorial Drive, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA.
