When Wellman R. Hunter was born in January 1898 in Spring Valley, Wisconsin, his father, Fredrick, was 26 and his mother, Nefa, was 22. He had four brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918 at the age of 20 in France and is now buried in Brookville Cemetery, Wildwood, St. Croix County, Wisconsin, USA.
