When Robert W. Bancroft was born in February 1899 in Connecticut, his father, John, was 27 and his mother, Jeanette, was 25. He had five brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company A, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 23, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He also has a marker in Windsorville Cemetery, Windsorville, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA .
