Lieutentant Arnold received his commission at Fort Niagara in November 1917, and was detailed for immediate overseas duty, partaking in seven major operations of the First Division. During the Aisne-Marne Offensive, he went ""over the top"" for the seventh time in command of Company G. Wounded in the right temple and also the ankle, he was exposed to mustard gas and removed to a hospital. He contracted pneumonia from the weakened state of his lungs due to gas. He received citations from both the French and American governments for courage and valor under fire. He died on November 18, 1918 at the age of 26 and is now buried in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, USA.
