When Talmage Waddell Gerrald was born in 1896 in South Carolina, his father, Charles, was 35 and his mother, Mattie, was 20. He had three brothers and four sisters. He was the oldest son and was educated at Furman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company D, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on May 30, 1918 and is now buried in Galivants Ferry Baptist Church Cemetery, Galivants Ferry, Horry County, South Carolina, USA.
