When Robert Banks Anderson was born on October 15, 1892, in Wilson, North Carolina, his father, William, was 47 and his mother, Isabella, was 30. He had five brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Lieutenant in Company A, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on May 29, 1918 and is now buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina, USA.
