Served in the U.S. Army, 502nd Paratroop Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, from June 20, 1942 to June 11, 1944. Corporal Butz was killed by enemy machine gun fire during the Normandy invasion on 11 June 1944. He was originally buried in France. In 1948, he was reinterred with full military honors near his home in the cemetery of Salem Methodist Church, East Texas, Pennsylvania.
