1LT Carlson was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Carlson. He attended Akron University for two years and then enrolled in the Pittsburgh School of Morticians, shortly before enlisting in the air corps. He went overseas in June. He graduated from Aloe Flying school at Victoria, Texas, and was commissioned as second lieutenant. Then he was assigned to Richmond, Virginia, for advanced training. Pilot of the P-47D “On the Ball” that took off from Station 122 in Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire, UK on a bomber escort mission for Operation Ramrod. He collided with the fighter of LT James Westphal at 1145 and his remains were never recovered. He is honored on the Tables of the Missing at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neupre, Belgium.
