When Clarence R. Barger was born in 1922 in Gentry, Missouri, his father, William, was 29 and his mother, Jessie, was 27. He had two brothers and one sister. He entered the service from Missouri. As a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Forces, he was wounded in action due to flak damage on 8th March 1944 while the pilot of P47-D serial no. 42-75275. Later he flew the P-51B serial no. 43-6580. He was shot down and listed as missing in action on 28 May 1944 flying in P-51B serial no. 43-6631. According to German records, three P-51’s were shot down in the same area. One set of remains were buried in the Zerbst Russian Cemetery on 5 Jun 44, and one body in the Meritz Civilian cemetery. There was no record of internment for the third pilot. One of the three airplanes crashed and burned completely. The remains of the pilot (believed to be Barger), were assumed to have been burned (one forefinger and bits of human remains were found onsite). It is believed that this was the airplane of LT Barger. Subsequent investigations (on 24 Feb and 22 Jun 48) failed to locate his remains. Barger remains missing in action.
