James W. Travis was born on June 5, 1925, in Beaver, Pike County, Ohio. He was the son of George W. Travis and Mary L. Blakely Camp. He entered the U.S. Army on August 7, 1943, to serve during World War II. After completing his training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, he was assigned to an 179th Engineer Combat Battalion as a Private and departed for overseas duty on August 1, 1944.

On August 23, 1944, while participating in combat operations near Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry, France, Travis was critically wounded. Despite medical efforts to save his life, he died of his wounds two days later, on August 25, 1944. He is now buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Xenia, Greene County, Ohio, USA.
